BETTER PRIESTHOOD
A great misunderstanding of the scriptures is to think that the new testament is a counterpart of the Old Testament. The true reality is that the old is just a shadow of the new. The New is better than the old and it is the perfect replacement for the old. Heb 10:9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.
The Old Testament was serviced by the levitical priesthood; an imperfect priesthood of descendants of Abraham called Levis, it wasn’t sinless in itself. The priests had to sacrifice for his own sin and the sin of the people (Heb 5:3). To establish for us the superiority of the priesthood of Jesus, the author of Hebrews had to show us Abraham’s encounter with Melchizedec & how Abraham recognized this king and priest and how even Levi had honoured Melchizedek in the loins of Abraham.
Jesus our high priest in the New is not from the tribe of Levi, he is from Judah a tribe concerning which nothing was said about priesthood. “This King-Priest did not arise because of a genealogical right under the law to be a priest, but by the power of an indestructible, resurrection life!” Hebrews 7:16 TPT. Hallelujah, we have the better. So much to unpack in Hebrews, I encourage you to go through the book of Hebrews for yourself. Stay blessed.
